The Joy in being a Chicago Suburb Baby Photographer:

I love Babies!

I first met with Gillian and her parents 6 months ago for Gill's newborn session and I can't believe this tiny lady is already 6 months old. Gillian is sitting up and smiling and and is learning about the big world around her. I don't have any babies on my own just yet but I meet with babies all day long! Such is the life of a suburb baby photographer;)

When I see the same returning clients over a couple of months time, it always shocks me that the same little peanut get bigger and more alert and becomes well, a tiny person. The same tiny peanut that slept all day long, now rolls over, and giggles and babbles and blows bubbles and smiles when she sees your face. Its pure magic and I love it so.

Don't Become a Suburb Baby Photographer unless...

Don't become a baby photographer if you don't absolutely love babies! I am so glad I photograph babies and it still amazes me that within months, the same baby looks so different! I mean, they have the same face but their expressions look different, and they look bigger all of a sudden.. I believe that photography is so important, especially in that first year of life..so much to capture..so much growth happens in that first year! I am so glad to be apart of it.. I am so glad to be a newborn photographer.

Babies grow up so fast!

I've seen a lot of children, both newborns through toddlers! It's amazing to see them grow and change, but still be that same little person! In this session, I compared the newborn photos to her 6 month photos. You can see how big she has become in just a few short months!

I took the newborn session while I was traveling for newborn sessions, but since then have provided a studio in my home for clients to meet at.

The convenience of a home studio... for you!

So you might think that it's more convenient for me to have a home studio, but it forces me to keep my house clean... ALWAYS!! Okay, okay.. it's nice to have a studio in the home for a couple of reasons. For one, I can be very consistent with my work. Being a suburb baby photographer, I used to visit TONS of clients all throughout the Chicagoland area. And everyone's homes are different. Some had great lighting, others were... mmmm. Then we had to move furniture around, set up the scenes, change the temperature of the house, you name it! There are lots of reasons why a mom might need their session done at their home, especially if there were complications during the birth and they can't travel. But for baby sessions, it's almost never that way.

It's actually convenient to not have to rearrange your home, clean up, you know the drill. Sometimes it's just easier to pop into the photographers studio, get the shots (without having to get dressed yourself) and then be done! If it's all set up ready to go, and your photographer is never late, then it's just a few less things you have to worry about putting together:) Check out this cute little one's newborn and 6 month session below!

Fall | Chicago Family Photographer

The fall season is just the best. The colors have been slowly changing more and more this season which is crazy! Normally Chicago's fall season last 2 maybe 3 weeks but its been slowly changing since October 10 and we still have good fall colors on November 3! The leaves have held unto their leaves which makes a difference. I don't believe there have been enough cold or rainy days through out the season consecutively so the trees still have plenty of color to them. Very excited about this fall season! And man have I needed this type of fall season this year, I have had so many regular family sessions in the last couple of weeks, my sessions per month have doubled. So fun! Here is just one of the many beautiful fall sessions I have photographed this past month. Its so funny that I am blogging about this one specifically because the baby boy was 18 months old and he was running around constantly and a little cranky from a smaller nap than usual. I am so pleased with how the photos turned out, and I love his expressions in these photos. I cant wait for my clients to see the photos :)

I hope you all are having a happy fall season like me!

This amazing fall family session made my day!

I had to stop and just take a second look at this delicious fall family session. Their outfits, the colors, the location...it all just worked so well.

Sometimes we just need to take a minute and look at our life again.. I hope these photos captured this time of their lives. Plus they can enjoy these photos for years to come. Also, the way his parents are loving on him, or even just the way his parents used to dress him up :)

Because that's what I did when I would look back at my family photos my parents took of me growing up. And that's why I decided to become a family photographer.

Picking locations for fall family photos

Typically I book sessions without needed to secure the location. This is especially true for fall because of the quickly changing colors! I'll usually go scouting, or make sure of the best location before I finalize my locations, so that we end up with great scenic locations with the best colors.

It would be kinda hard to actually tell people way ahead of time that are booking months in advance, where they are meeting only to have to change it on them as we get closer because the colors weren't good. Fall family photos get complicated in this fashion, but fortunately I haven't run into too many problems with updating people and getting their session locations locked in.

Using only 1 or 2 lenses help me focus in on the family session

Instead of getting really technical with the shoot,  I focus on moving quickly and capturing the opportune moments! If I started to swap lenses, I would probably miss a lot of these moments, and that's not good. So I really stick with 1 or 2 lenses, moving back and forth. I'll go closer and then further to get the different angles. This is also really important for a consistent look to the gallery.  I love the flattering looks of a longer lens, so I try to only these. If I really need a much wider shot, that's when I'll switch to the second lens;)

Fall is one of my favorite time's to photograph families

I have blogged many times about other fantastic fall sessions because of how much I love the colors and outfits! If you like this session and the colors you see in it, I would highly suggest you check out another blog post for a gorgeous fall family session that I photographed in Hinsdale, IL. It is a really fun session that takes place during a 90 degree day.. in fall! I also photographed another great Chicago location called the Montrose Harbor, and photographed in the amazing fall colors that are all around that area, you can check out that fall family session here!

Three | Chicago Children Photographer

Hey Friends,

Anyone else having a crazy summer like me? Im sure everyone is. My summer consists of weddings, moving, summer sessions in the summer heat, sweet newborns, my puppy kodak and lots of editing nights.

This session below was done with the cutest of littles and their sweet smiles. These twins just turned three. We ran around, we screamed, we shared eskimo kisses and then took a quick dip at the beach. This is what summer should be all about.

When I have such a crazy busy summer, what helps is having these types of fun moments to cherish and look back on. I find it so funny that as busy as I am with sessions, I don't realize how often I get to do fun things even though its at work. I go to the beach often, I go to Navy Pier and Millennium Park, I go to Lincoln Park Zoo about 3 times a week, ha! And the best part is being able to catch up on my clients lives and hear about what is going on for them. I also love getting to watch my little clients play and run and have a great time enjoying the session. I love being able to walk away from a session and know it was a positive experience. And it shows when you look back at the photos and there are nothing but smiles and cheeky faces.

I hope you are enjoying your hot hot summer.

xoxo,

Year One | Chicago Baby Photographer

My heart can't take it, you guys. In the past several years in this business I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know some really wonderful families. This baby in particular is special because she is my first "second sibling" that I have photographed throughout her first year of life. Her older brother is now 2.5 years old, so it's been a really fun couple of years with just this family alone. Every milestone, from newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month and 1 year sessions. She has blossomed before my very eyes into a sweet beautiful little one year old. In this last year I have only seen her total about 7 or so hours of this first year, but I have watched her grow behind my lens. My camera has captured her sweet soul. She will grow up with precious photos of her from newborn to baby and then toddler. She will have pictures of when she couldn't even sit up to now where she is starting to run! Like every little one I photograph, I love watching them grow up. For just that hour of our little session, I get to hold them and make them giggle. I sing to them, and make silly noises. I may even wipe the drool off of their faces before snapping that smiley adorable photo.

What I want to make clear, is that I love my job. I love the snuggly newborns, the chunky arm rolls, the sweet smiles, the burps, the drool, the "sad cries", the giggles, the blank stares...everything.

Everyday I witness a new miracle, and I get to visit that same miracle throughout the year.

x0x0,

Abigail Joyce
