This beautiful baby girl is named Catherine. She is 5 1/2 pounds and is 6 weeks old in these photos. She is a premie. Our session was so unique to me. I normally photograph newborns around 5-7 days, so they are just under one week and Catherine was 6 weeks old. But the very amazing thing about Catherine is that she was born at 31 weeks of her moms pregnancy. Catherine is very strong and very healthy though. She already has quite a story for her 6 weeks of life.

This is why I love newborn photography. Something that seems so impossible; trying to pose a 6 week old like a 5 day old was so easy. But only because she was born early. Pregnancy is a really special and unique experience. A mom can give birth at 31 weeks and another mom can give birth at 40 weeks and 2 days (Like my mother)

Anyways, I have been having the most amazing year so far. 2015 has already been so fulfilling.

I became an S-corporation this January, I am officially Abigail Joyce Photography, Inc. !!!

In this upcoming year, I already foresee many changes in my life. I will be getting married, I will be turning 22, I will own a photography studio, and I will be starting my last year in college. And with all of those amazing new things happening in my life, there will be something also just as exciting, I will start traveling. This may seem not so exciting to some, but this means everything to me. I will be going to Italy with my soon to be husband for our honeymoon. And I will take my first plane ride to Spokane, Washington in April. I will be hiking with Ben (my fiance) and his brothers and  a couple more friends for a 6 day, 60 miles hike on the west coast. I cant contain my excitement! I have always wanted to travel and see the world. I have always loved the outdoors and adventures. I love to rock climb, going kayaking/canoeing, and hike in the most beautiful places. In April, I will be hiking around some mountains, and I hope everyone gets ready to view some epic photos from my trip.

2014 was an amazing year! I got engaged to my best friend, I became full time in photography, and I met some amazing people along the way. I have grown so much and learned so much about myself.

So, heres to the New Year, 2014 was an amazing year and I am hoping 2015 will be just as wonderful.

I have a hard time believing fall is already over. We're a week away from Christmas...its December 17 already! I finished my final tests from this past semester this morning. I walked outside to my car, my hands were frozen as I reached in my pocket for my keys. It was 27 degrees in Chicago this afternoon. To Chicagoans, this weather is considered normal. Today, as I was leaving school I breathed a big sigh of relief and I drove off. It took a couple of minutes for my car to warm up and as it did, I was also thawing out as well. This whole semester went by, these four months... and I am just realizing that it is over. Ok, so that is a major exaggeration. But doesn't this happen to the best of us? We are so busy with our daily lives that its hard to step back and focus on whats really happening. I had the most wonderful fall and winter season already. It was the busiest season by far for me. Not only in my business but in my personal life. In the midst of running my own business, I have been planning my own wedding and finishing up this semester in school. With all of these things going on in my life, its hard for me to believe that the semester is over. That the seasons are done changing this year and that my life is going to slow down over the winter season. For me, this time of year is a time to reflect. I have been looking back today at the past sessions I had this fall and I am forever joyful of the moments I have had and the memories I will hold dear. I have seem some really beautiful things behind my camera and its so fun to be able to look back....

Happy Holidays everyone <3 Abigail Joyce

Hello from the Chicago Baby Photographer

In this post I'll highlight a few details on a cake smash, what to expect, and when they take place.

Cupcake cake smash studio photo shoot

How sweet is this cake smash! How I love a good cake smash and taking photos of babies!

  • Baby sessions take place after the newborn stage is completed
  • Usually starting around the 3 month point
  • Cake smashes are typically for a 1-year session
  • This can take place between 11 and 14 months, as the "1-year"ness hangs around during that period
  • Colorful scenes is out, soft, bright and simple is in (plus it's timeless)
  • The best thing about cake smashes is watching these little kiddos go crazy over how tasty it is... but
  • Kiddos with little experience with sweetners, or photos, tend to not know how to go crazy for their cake, so some convincing and "help" from mom/dad may be needed during the shoot
  • Cake smashes are the LAST thing during the shoot, for obvious reasons (if it's not obvious, cake gets everywhere and on everything!)

Honestly, when was the last time you saw someone enjoy cake for one of the "first times" in their lives??  I love all the squeals, giggles and crumbs of cake everywhere. The strangest has been back of heads, and I don't even know how that happens. Life is an amazing thing and witnessing little kids getting so much out of cake is adorable.

What I've noticed from being a photographer... Don't expect every child to react the same way to these four things:

  1. Christmas Lights - Some children will bang them on the ground and giggle like no other; other children will cry.
  2. Cake- Some children will smash that cake like it was their job; others may take one little bite and crawl away. No cake will be smashed.
  3. Bath tubs- Some children LOVE water and all things bubbles; others will scream in horror.
  4. Hats - Children don't love hats but if you distract them enough and time it properly, they will forget anything was placed on their heads!

Baby's first Christmas

I am so lucky to be able to watch these kiddos grow up. One day the kids that I have photographed over the years will be able to look back at these photos. They will be able to see how small they once were, how much excitement was in their face and eyes when they held onto those christmas lights, and see how much they were loved by their wonderful parents.

Its December. Its a Saturday night. I am editing like a mad woman and sending out all of my clients photos. While I edit these photos I see the happy faces of my clients and the joy they are expressing in the photos. I look forward to my own future when I will have my own kids some day and feel the same love and joy. Did I ever tell you, I want four of my own kids someday? I am 21 right now, but by the time I am 24 I am hoping to have my first child. I know I am rambling, but its late. I wanted to show you these beautiful family photos.
