So you're looking for a Chicago baby photographer to capture those special and fleeting moments of your newborn. Here's some great thoughts from a local newborn photographer:
While there are hundreds, if not thousands of photographers available for hire, one important details to pay attention to is their code of safety and conduct. Make sure to ask questions about the space they use, their health, allergens they may be carrying, or just get to know their practice for keeping your little one safe and healthy during one of their first trips out of the house!
A good practice for all those handling babies and newborns is to wash or sanitize your hands often! Make sure your photographer is doing just this. It's my practice to always have hand sanitizer available for myself, kids, and families as they come into my studio.
Make sure no one is sick! This may be a no-brainer, and is not just something for your photographer to be careful of, but part of your responsibility is to be honest about your child's health or if you yourself are not feeling well. Passing germs or bugs can lead to others getting sick. Best to play it safe.
There are great reasons for meeting at your home! Artistic reasons and medical reasons at among the top.
Choosing a newborn session doesn't require you leave your home, and in fact a fantastic option is a lifestyle session where your photographer meets with you, your family, and your little one to capture the essence of your new life together in your own home.
If you are having a hard time traveling due to any surgery or doctor's orders, this is also a great reason to meet at your home. It is usually require that your home is clean, orderly, and has beautiful natural light. Without these three important factors, you may find that your session doesn't look as good as you'd like.
Studio newborn sessions may include family photos or not. This is dependent on your photographer. Make sure to check into this so you don't end up missing out on something you'd like to do.
I personally have made this an option for families coming to my studio. My sessions are modular, allow you to go as small as you'd like and as big as you'd like. This also helps keep the prices reasonable for the time and effort it takes to make this quality possible.
If given the option, most professional photographers will prefer their studio over meeting remotely. This is so they can provide the best results with the tools they are familiar with.
Don't forget to look at each photographers fine print closely. There are many many ways that newborn photographers will provide you with the final results. Many photographers require a down
payment, a sitting fee, and separate gallery fees. If this doesn't make sense to you, choosing a photographer with a simple and all inclusive payment structure may be an easier way for you to choose your photographer. For example, I choose a simple structure to my costs so that everything from permits, insurance, digital rights, and my time are all included in your final gallery. No extra payments, unlocking plans, or hooks. Why do I do this? It's actually for my own sanity, and I can only imagine it makes it easier for you as well:)
We live in a changing landscape of technology and personal preferences. Most of us like to do things ourselves, and this includes printing and framing photos. With so many resources available and prices getting more competitive, deciding on a printed heirloom or a digital image package is difficult to justify for many. This has made way for the all inclusive digital packages that photographers are now providing. I don't recommend one way or the other, and I am honored when clients hang my artwork in their homes. I do want to understand clients, their needs, and hope that my specific outlook on packages, provides something that my clients find helpful and not confusing for them.
One of the best things that can happen from your newborn session is that you meet your new family photographer!
In the many years that I have been photographing both family and newborns, I love most when I can be apart of that amazing growth in your family! Kiddos are the best, and I love to see them grow from bump to beyond. It's an amazing experience to have someone who knows you, your family, and how to best capture them throughout the years to come.
Don't forget that as you choose your newborn or baby photographer, you may be picking your next family photographer for years to come!
Our day started with breakfast at BlueBerry Hill Cafe in LaGrange. Then we drove over to the Starbucks in Western Springs where it all started. Ben and I met at Starbucks 4 years ago when I was grabbing coffee before jumping on the train to head downtown Chicago on my day off. Ben asked why I had a camera around my neck, and I told him I was going to take pictures downtown for fun. Sparks flew. Ben fell in love with me. 1 month later he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. 1 year later we start our own photography business. 2 years later he asked me to marry him. And just two Sundays ago, we got married.
We don't have very many pictures available from our wedding day, but we had friends and family film with their Iphones for a youtube channel, (link below)
Lots of changes happened this month of August. I got married to my best friend. I moved out of my childhood home. We got a new car, we went to the Dominican Republic for our honeymoon. And last but not least, Ben surprised me the day we got back with a 10 week old Siberian Husky puppy who we are both madly in love with. His name is Kodak. :)
We couldn't be more happy. God is so good.

So, I'm about a month away from my wedding. I'm nervous. I think about my wedding day. I get emotional. I tear up. alot.
I'm not nervous that things wont be perfect. I'm not nervous to spill anything on my dress (well, okay that would bum me out) I'm nervous that the day will go by so fast, and I will be so overwhelmed with the days events that I wont have a moment to take it all in. I'm nervous for Ben to see me walking down the aisle for the first time. I'm nervous that I will cry too much. the. whole. day. I'm already holding back tears writing this out. ughh. I wish these nerves would go away. I'm nervous that Ive picked a song for the father/daughter dance that is too personal and I will just sob the entire time. I'm nervous about moving out of my house, my childhood home. I'm nervous for what awaits in my future. My future that has taken forever to get here and now that its here, I'm nervous to take this next step. I know these feelings are all valid and that everyone must feel this way in this stage of life. This is the part of growing up thats unfamiliar but we all find ourselves in this scary stage of life.
So, for right now I'm a nervous wreck. In about a month, I wont be so nervous though. I will have a wonderful man standing at the end of that aisle looking down nervously at me, ready to face this next step of life.
xoxo,

I get asked a lot how I started photography, how I wanted to be a portrait photographer. I love this question. I get to explain to my clients and friends all the time why I wanted to photographing families and babies. The reason is simple. I grew up with my father always taking photos of my siblings and I. We have picture albums that fill up entire shelves in the basement of pictures of us growing up. I flip through them almost monthly, sometimes to look for a good #tbt (throwback Thursday) or just to see my baby pictures again, sometimes it was for school projects and sometimes its for inspiration. My parents only seldom took us to JCPenney or Sears for "professional" pictures, so all of our pictures in the albums are us growing up in the same house just with older wallpaper. Most of the pictures are candids or just daily life photos. I saw my dad's love for photography and I took it as my own. I cherish what cameras do for us. They allow us to remember a time and a memory.
The newborn photographed below won't always be this size or this sleepy. In fact, we probably can't pose her today the same way we did two weeks ago. That moment has passed, but the photos will stay with her family for a lifetime. And one day she will be able to look back at her newborn photos and see all the details of her tiny little fingers and toes and how beautiful she was as a newborn.
