“Do you have any kids?” | Chicago Newborn Photographer
“Abbey, do you have any kids?”
“No, I don’t have any kids…yet”
This is my answer everytime anyone asks me during a session if I have any kids. I unfortunately always have to say no. The responses I get to that answer are always “Really? You are so young!”, “Wow, you are so good with them, I thought you had a couple of kids already, you are a natural” or “You are going to have so many great photos of them when they grow up.”
Yes, I am young, arguably too young still. I just turned 23 years old and sometimes I still feel like I am a teenager and when I am at a family session with a 5 year old, I tend to feel even younger (I tend to get really silly).
I find myself a little bummed out when people respond with “Oh you are still young, you have plenty of time.” Not that this is bad response, I just am reminded of my grandma, who at my age already had 3 children. And then I think of my mom who already had my sister and my brother soon on the way. I find myself bummed out with this response because at this time of my life, I thought I would already be pregnant or trying to have kids but I’m so far away from the thought, its scary. I had a plan for myself growing up, I had hopes that I would be done with college at the age of 22 (I’m 23 and there is no end in sight), I thought I would get married after college (oops, already married) and I would start having kids and be a stay at home mom at 23/24…So my plan got a little messy in these past couple of years..instead of staying on track with school, I started my career which wonderfully blossomed and now is a full time job. I plan on going back to school this summer and slowly but surely will graduate (tbd). My plan for having kids is on hold for now but its always on my mind, especially because of the line of work I am in. You would think I would have my “baby fix” as I see babies every single day but its not the same as having your own baby. I always wonder what my baby will look like since my husband and I look nothing alike and I also wonder if I am even capable of having kids?!
When people respond with “Wow you are so good with them, you are a natural” I always correct them by saying “Oh you did all of the prep work by making your newborn super sleepy for the session…which is true! If the baby is already sleeping for the session, my job is super easy. Anything knowledge of newborns I have or anything I bring with me to help sooth the newborns is because I learned it from my clients who are actual moms. And I have no idea how to take care of children from day 15 to year 18…like not. one. clue….
And when I hear “You are going to have so many great photos of them when they grow up”…yeah okay that one may be true, hehe. 😉
